Proud2Serve.net working with Hampshire Constabulary

Hampshire Constabulary is committed to reducing the fear of crime and making public places safer, and incidents of a homophobic or transphobic nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Hampshire Constabulary would like to share with Proud2Serve readers, our commitment to serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. There are significant numbers of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces living and/or working in our two counties. We would encourage these readers, their partners, families and friends, to work with Hampshire Constabulary in tackling homophobia and transphobia.

Hampshire Constabulary is committed to reducing the fear of crime and making public places safer, and incidents of a homophobic or transphobic nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"We aim to record, investigate and detect all homophobic and transphobic incidents, so if you have been a target of hate crime, because you are, or have been perceived to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender we’d like you to report it."

A homophobic incident is defined as “Any incident which is perceived to be homophobic by the victim or any other person”

Hate Crime can be reported in a number of ways; via telephone to Hampshire Police on 0845 045 45 45 (or crimestoppers – 0800 555111), at Police Stations, LGBT venue’s, through Partner agencies and online. (see Link to Hate Crime section of Hampshire Constabulary website)

Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officers (LAGLO’s)

LAGLO’s are a mix of Police Officers and Police Staff who have special understanding and training on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. The scheme was set up in 1996 and currently there are over 120 LAGLO’s working within Hampshire Constabulary in a wide variety of roles.

The LAGLO role includes enhancing the relationship between the Police and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in an effort to boost people’s trust and confidence in coming forward to report hate crime incidents. LAGLO’s also support victims and witnesses of homophobic or transphobic incidents through the criminal justice process. Finally, they advise colleagues and promote understanding of the needs of the LGBT communities.

LAGLO’s frequently visit gay friendly venues and hold police surgeries to help foster good relations with the community and listen to local concerns.

LAGLO’s work closely with partner agencies including Healthy Gay Hampshire, Inscape and Gay Community Health Service.

Hampshire LGBT Resource Group (HLGBTRG)

The objectives of this staff support group are on the chart to the right.

Members are elected by LGBT Officers and Staff within the Constabulary. The group was successful in securing a full time LGBT Diverse Communities Officer within Hampshire Constabulary. This role includes support and training for the 120 plus LAGLO’s who serve the communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. In addition the LGBT Diverse Communities Officer represents LGBT Officers and Staff at a strategic level within the organisation.

The resource group has been instrumental in the ranking of Hampshire Constabulary as joint third place in the prestigious Stonewall equality index of gay-friendly workplaces. Members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces that identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or unsure of their sexuality are welcome to join the resource groups confidential mailing list as associate members. You will then be updated on social events in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight for LGBT staff which you are welcome to attend.

Currently members of Hampshire Constabulary’s LGBT Resource Group are working with the Royal Military Police’s Senior Officers in education around LGBT issues (see the Proud2Serve.net members' update for May 2008 for more information). These LGBT awareness sessions have been very well received by the Royal Military Police and will enhance the understanding of issues that military LGBT staff may have around ‘being outed’, relationships with colleagues, suffering homophobia and so on.
